We took our daughter to the specialist today for a six month check up.  No worries, she is doing very well.  We are very proud of it too.  But, before we saw the doctor we had to stop by the lab and drop of a sample.  While we were there they surprised our daughter with a blood draw.
She is not good with needles and immediately started to tremble with fear, and I mean that literally.  So having had my share of fear of the needle I sat beside her, grabbed her hand and told her that she could squeeze as hard as she wanted and it wouldn't hurt me.  To which she quckly grabbed my hand and tried to squeeze the life out of it.  But she was so tense the tech had to tell her to relax.
I had a flash of when my boys were infants and they pricked their tiny feet and how much that made me cry.  I just can't stand to watch any of my children in pain.  So it was time to distract.  What is the best way to distract a 13 year old girl from the impending needle headed right for her arm..  talk about boys..   well it worked..
So we both made it thru the experience, the blood was drawn, there were no tears (not even mine), and my lovely daughter tells me.. "your way better at distracting me then dad!"

I've been a mother for 16 years, I've been a single mom, a married mom and now I am also a step-mom.  Did I mention that I've also been a step-daughter?  (oh and a red-headed one at that.)  I want to share with others the daily joys and trials of being a parent and step-parent.  Sometimes, we as mothers, just need to know that there is someone else out there going through the same thing, or thinking the same thing as we are..  And there is..
